HENRY COUNTY, Tenn. – Fire investigators believe a cigarette started the fire that killed a husband and wife in Henry County.
Firefighters responded to a fire at a mobile home on Old McKenzie Highway around 9:00 p.m. Thursday. While they were fighting the fire, they found the bodies of Gary and Frankie Bardy.
Henry County Sheriff Monte Belew said what happened was senseless because it didn't have to happen. He said a working smoke detector would have absolutely saved their lives. "This is a real tragedy and we really hate it for the victims and their families," said Sheriff Belew.
It is believed the Bardy's did have a smoke alarm, but for whatever reason, it wasn't working. No foul play was suspected. The bodies of the victims were sent to the medical examiner for an autopsy.
