Monterey Police Chief Told To Quit Or Face Being Fired

Posted: Updated:

MONTEREY, Tenn. – Resign or face being fired by the Civil Service Board.  That's the ultimatum given to the Monterey Police Chief following a NewsChannel 5 Investigation.

Mayor Richard Godsey told Police Chief Kevin Phillips he wanted him to either step down, or he'd take him before the Civil Service Board to have him fired.  The Mayor says Phillips' response was "Then take me to the Civil Service Board."

Mayor Godsey told NewsChannel 5 , he hoped to have that process started at the first of next week. Phillips has been on paid administrative leave since January.  Last year, NewsChannel 5 Investigates caught him shipping a government bulldozer to his own property, using money from the town's drug fund.

The grand jury did not indict Phillips, but the District Attorney says it's still open.
