Police Release Identity Of Pedestrian Struck On I-24

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Police have identified the pedestrian who attempted suicide when he walked into traffic in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 24.

Officials said 39-year-old Johnny Ray Potter Junior was hit by a pickup truck Tuesday morning and remains in critical condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

The first call came into 911 about a man jumping in front of vehicles around 6:40 a.m. near the Harding Place exit. He was struck by a Chevrolet Silverado less than three minutes later.

The driver told police that the man came into his lane, faced oncoming traffic, and placed his hands over his head. The pickup was then struck by a tractor trailer, which slammed the pickup into a Nissan Murano.

Three people inside the Murano were also taken to Vanderbilt with non-critical injuries.

The interstate was closed for nearly three hours while police cleared the scene.
