MACON COUNTY, Tenn. – Officials have arrested a Lafayette man in connection with the shooting of another man in what was called a road rage incident.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation charged 41-year-old Tobey Wettig with one count of aggravated assault and five counts of reckless endangerment.

Investigators said Wettig was driving home around 5:30 p.m. on March 14 when another motorist began driving too close to him, which made him angry.

He pulled into his driveway on Church Street, parked his vehicle at the edge of his driveway, pulled out his handgun, and fired in the direction of the other motorist as he was passing by.

The bullet struck 44-year-old Tommy Hillard, who was sitting at a stop sign on Ellington Drive. He was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he was released the next day.

The other four reckless endangerment charges were for four other individuals in the area when the shooting occurred.

Wettig was booked into the Macon County jail without bond.

Schools in Macon County were closed on Friday following the shooting as a safety precaution.
