Highway 84 To Close Temporarily For Debris Removal

Posted: Updated:

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - A state highway will close for several hours on Tuesday afternoon so crews can clear debris from a rockslide.

Highway 84 will close from noon to 6 p.m. so that a crew contracted by the Tennessee Department of Transportation can break up a large boulder that slide down onto the shoulder of the road.

The rockslide shut down Highway 84 for several hours Monday night after a boulder, trees and power lines slid onto it, approximately one mile outside Monterey.

Closures and detours will be set up at SR-284 in Overton County and on SR-84 in Putnam County near the top of the hill in Monterey. Residents who live in the area will be allowed to get to their homes.

TDOT said work will resume Wednesday morning at 7 a.m., closing the roadway to traffic. They believe the work should be completed Wednesday, but if not, they will follow the 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. schedule for work until it is completed.

Rainstorms moved through Tennessee Monday, but it wasn't immediately known if weather caused the rockslide.
