NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The sponsor of legislation competing with Governor Bill Haslam's proposal to create a school voucher program has withdrawn her bill.
Republican Senator Dolores Gresham of Somerville withdrew the measure in the Senate Education Committee on Wednesday.
Haslam's measure would limit the program to 5,000 students in failing schools in the academic year that begins in August and grow to allowing 20,000 students by 2016.
Gresham's would increase the income limit for eligibility to about $75,000 for a family of four, up quite a bit from the $42,643 envisioned by the Republican governor. Gresham's bill also has no limitation on growth.
Gresham, who chairs the Education Committee, said she may bring the bill up again before the end of session.
Haslam's measure was delayed in the committee on Wednesday.
