Police Believe Duplex Fire, Shots Fired Were Related

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A North Nashville duplex was destroyed by fire just hours after shots were fired on Thursday, and police said a dispute between neighbors could have led to both incidents.

George Stewart, 55, was charged with attempted criminal homicide in connection with shots fired at his neighbor's car on Thursday afternoon. A police affidavit said Stewart and his neighbor Terry Knighton were in an ongoing dispute about Stewart allegedly loitering and selling drugs near Knighton's house on 17th Avenue North. Knighton told police his wife was picking up him up at their home when Stewart opened fire on them. They were not hit, but their vehicle had six to seven rounds fired into it.

Later in the evening, a duplex on 17th Avenue North went up in flames. Police believe it could have been started in connection to the shots fired call, but have not released any further details.

No one was hurt in either incident.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.

Stewart was held on $750,000 bond.
