Cherry Blossom Festival Kicks Off In Nashville

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - It may not feel like spring just yet, but Nashville's Cherry Blossom Festival was in full bloom on Saturday.

The Public Square in front of the historic Metro Courthouse was packed with people celebrating Nashville's special bond with Japan. Cherry blossoms have been a symbol of friendship with Japan since 1912. Here in Nashville, the festival held a double meaning.

Sister Cities of Nashville is building a relationship with Kamakura, Japan in hopes of establishing an official sister-city partnership.

"To connect the people of the community with the people of our sister cities around the world," said Heather Cunningham, with Sister Cities of Nashville. "Promoting peace through mutual understanding, respect and cooperation."

The festival kicked off Saturday morning with a 2.5 mile walk led by Nashville Mayor Karl Dean.
