COLUMBIA, Tenn. – A high school baseball team in Rutherford County is facing a struggle beyond the baseball diamond.

One of its members, Clay Riggs, is a prominent pitcher on the Riverdale High School Baseball team, and he's in the hospital fighting for his life.

Doctors said he may have popped blood vessels in his lungs after a surgery to repair his knee three weeks ago. That popped blood vessel may have caused his lungs to collapse.

It's been a waiting game to see if Clay will get better, but people who know him said his family has seen signs of improvement.

"He's lying there with the baseball in his right hand, and his dad said a couple times, he's actually turned the ball while he's lying there," said Rachael Smith, a family friend.

The folks at the Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt have been looking after Clay.  He's been breathing through the help of a ventilator.
