Police Identify Body Found In Franklin County Field

Posted: Updated:

COWAN, Tenn. - Officials have released the identity a man who was found dead in Franklin County. The body was discovered in a cornfield off Jackson Cemetery Road and Slagtown Road Sunday.

The man was identified as of 26-year-old Corey Matthews.

Investigators said Matthews' family first reported him missing Sunday morning.

"His family called because they had no contact with him from the night before and they were concerned about his well-being," said Sgt. Chris Guess with the Franklin County Sheriff's Office. "That's what initiated the officers to go search for him."

One of the deputies began searching around town and had a hunch about where to start - a cornfield accessible by a gravel road in Cowan.

Matthews' body was discovered around 2:30 p.m.

"He's familiar with this area and so he thought I'll look there first, and as fate may have it, that's where the man's body was discovered," said Sgt. Guess.

Investigators did not say exactly how Matthews died. They said they were waiting for an autopsy from the medical examiner.

It was not clear if investigators suspected foul play.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Office, Cowan Police Department and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation were still on the scene late Sunday evening.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call the Franklin County Sheriff's Office at 934-962-0123 or 1-800-TBI-FIND.
