MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – One person has been killed after the vehicle they were in drove off a bridge on Almaville Road in Rutherford County and slammed headfirst into the creek bed.

The single-vehicle crash happened around 4 p.m. Monday where Almaville Road crosses over Steward Creek, just north of Highway 840.

Video from Sky5 HD showed a dark Jeep Wrangler on its side with significant damage to the front end and top of the vehicle.

Troopers from the Tennessee Highway Patrol and emergency medical technicians were called to the scene. The identity of the victim was not available.

A tow truck was called in to pull the vehicle up the embankment and out of the creek bed.

Officials said northbound traffic was partially blocked on the two-lane highway. Southbound lanes were delayed as drivers slowed to get by the wreckage and emergency vehicles.

It was not clear why the vehicle went off the road.

The roadway was expected to be cleared by 6:30 p.m.
