NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Addressing a growing need to help victims of domestic violence, the Davidson County District Attorney's office announced plans Tuesday to add a special team of prosecutors to help with thousands of court cases.

"The trend has to be to bring these cases into the criminal justice system and break the cycle of violence," explained Davidson County District Attorney Torry Johnson.

The Domestic Violence Prosecution Team will devote 11 people, six assistant DA's and five victim witness coordinators, to help handle the prosecution of domestic crime-related cases.

The team was disbanded 10 years ago because of budget concerns, but has now been put back in place after Mayor Karl Dean recognized a growing need on the part of the DA's office.

"This is a big step in the right direction," Torry Johnson added.

It was welcomed news for those affected by domestic violence, like Sue Garay whose daughter Vickie Pearsall was brutally killed by her husband at a Green Hills dentist office last year.

"I can't tell you how much I miss her," Sue said about her daughter's death.

Sue said her daughter Vickie was in an abusive marriage for almost 10 years and every time her husband, Gilbert Pearsall, was arrested and brought to court for beating her, he would threaten his wife.

"He'd tell her if she showed up for court he would kill her, so she never went," Sue explained.

Sue hopes that by having a specialized team in place, domestic violence victims like her daughter might be able to get help before it's too late.
