La Vergne Baseball, Softball Season In Jeopardy

LA VERGNE, Tenn. - Hundreds of kids are disappointed to hear they may not have a baseball or softball season this spring.

This comes after the city determined the La Vergne Baseball and Softball Association (LBSA) had not provided necessary documents to use the city fields.

The season is scheduled to start April 6, and the league involves around 900 kids of all ages.

The city requires all organizations to provide proof of corporate and non-profit status to use city facilities.  A city spokesperson said all organizations are held to the same standards.

Mike Catanese, the Commissioner of the LBSA, said he had no idea there were any problems with the group's paperwork.

"We submitted paperwork that was required to the city every year and everything seemed to be fine with our relationship with the city every year," said Catanese.

Parents were upset to hear the news, and lined up to get refunds of the fees they've already paid to the LBSA.

"I am disappointed for my son who loves the game of baseball," said parent Natasha Clifton. "I am going to do whatever it takes for him to play."

Coaches of the teams registered with the LBSA are invited to attend an informational meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at La Vergne City Hall.  City officials said they hope is to find a way to save the season.

"We want to make sure these kids play," said City of La Vergne Spokesperson Kathy Tyson. "Our top priority is the children."

Catanese agrees.  He hopes something can be done to ensure kids can still play.

"The city and I are on the same page," said Catanese.  "We do not want the kids to lose a season."

Parents are encouraged to contact the LBSA directly if they have already paid fees and costs to the LBSA for their children to participate in this year's baseball and softball leagues.  All families will be offered a refund.

They can attend meetings Thursday, March 28 from 6:30-8 p.m. and again on Friday, March 29, from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn at 2631 Highwood Blvd. in Smyrna to get refunds.
