Police Say Man Had Daughter In Car During DUI Crash

Posted: Updated:

FRANKLIN, Tenn. - A Williamson County man was arrested on multiple charges including drunken driving after a head-on collision with his child in the car.

Franklin Police were called out to Liberty Park near Carothers Parkway on Tuesday night where the driver of a truck had struck another vehicle.

Officers found 37-year old Joseph Rayner Harwell to be under the influence of alcohol.

Harwell's 7-year old child, who was unrestrained in the car with him, had to be taken to the hospital for her injuries. She was listed in stable condition.

Harwell and the other driver were treated and released from local hospital for minor injuries.

Harwell was charged with DUI, violation of child restraint law, reckless endangerment, failure to maintain lane of travel, and failure to report an injury crash.

Harwell was freed on $7,500 bond.

Police said having a child in the vehicle at the time of a DUI arrest enhances sentencing to include a minimum of 30 days in jail and a $1,000 minimum fine if convicted.
