Bartender Charged When Ex-Cop Thrown From Bar

Posted: Updated:

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Police said a Memphis bartender has been charged with assault after a disabled retired police officer with speech problems was thrown out of a bar when the bartender couldn't understand him.

WMC-TV reported the incident took place Wednesday at Jack Magoo's Sports Bar & Grill.

The station said retired Germantown police captain Brian Roper was removed from the bar because the bartender thought he was intoxicated.

But Roper was left with a communication disorder after a stroke, and he said the bartender couldn't understand him.

Roper showed the station bruises on both of his arms, a bruise on his chest and a cut on his head that was treated at a hospital.

Police said bartender Mark Taylor was charged with simple assault.
