NASHVILLE, Tenn. – An elderly woman got a rude awakening Wednesday morning. When she opened her eyes, she was staring directly at a thief in her bedroom.

"I didn't hear a sound," homeowner Katie Crutchfield said. "He didn't make no sounds or nothing."

For 43 years Crutchfield has lived at her home on Ogden Drive with no problems.

"He went in the jewelry box and went in these pocket books," Crutchfield said.

Crutchfield initially thought her grandson David stopped by.

"When I woke up and looked, I just seen his face around and I knew it was somebody," she said. "And I said David, David. And I said I know that's not David."

The thief broke windows, even kicked in the door trying to get inside. He rummaged through the house but only left with Crutchfield's wallet.

"It just brought a surge of anger," granddaughter DeWayna McMillan said. "And I was like who in the world would do this to a senior citizen."

Crutchfield's family came over immediately and was spending the day installing alarms and cleaning up.

"I'm thankful I'm alright and thankful I didn't wake up and get frightened," Crutchfield said. "(Because) see I would've taken my cane, knocked him in the head or done something to him."

The 85-year-old lives alone and has no plans of moving. "I am not scared," she said. "I don't know why I am not scared."

However, she warns if the thief tries to strike again, she'll be even more prepared.

"If he be in here, I sure will shoot him."

No arrests have been made.  Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 615-74-CRIME.
