Dog Alerts Homeowner To Fire In Columbia

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, Tenn. – A homeowner credited his dog with alerting him to a fire at his home in Columbia on Wednesday morning.

The homeowner was asleep when the fire broke out around 6 a.m. at the home on Birchwood Drive. His dog's barking woke him up, prompting him to search the house. When he opened the door to a remodeled garage area, smoke started rushing in and set off the fire alarm.

The man and his dog made it out safely.

Sky 5 HD showed a large hole in the roof of the one-story home, and firefighters spraying water on the home.

Columbia Fire Chief Lee Bergeron said there was heavy smoke damage to the home, and 40-percent of the home's structure was damaged. Some items inside the home were salvaged.

The chief said the fire will be ruled accidental.
