MAURY COUNTY, Tenn. - A little girl in Maury County was praised for knowing what to do when a frightening fire started inside her home.

The 8-year-old girl called Maury County's 911 after accidentally setting her microwave on fire. Safety officials called it a perfect example of why it's so important to teach children how to dial 911.

In audio recordings of the call, you can hear the little girl asking a disptacher to send firefighters to her house.

"There's a fire in the microwave. Please, I need a fire engine quick," the little girl said.

"Ok, are you by yourself. Are you by yourself?," said dispatcher Bonnie Napier.

"Yes, me and my brother. No, No adult," the little girl added.

"I'm going to get the fire department. Get out of your house, okay?" Napier told the girl.

"We are, we're outside," she responded.

By the time firefighters got to the house, the 8-year-old was standing outside on the front lawn huddled around her younger brother with a blanket keeping them warm. She explained to officials that they were trying to make macaroni and cheese in the microwave but accidentally left a metal spoon in the bowl which started the fire.

"I was glad they were okay; she was upset but she knew what she was doing," Napier said on Thursday afternoon.

That little girl told officials her school resource officer had taught her how to call 911 in an emergency and she was just remembering what she'd been told.

"I think it just really goes to show that at least some of the kids if not all of them are listening and getting the message," explained Ritchie Schatz with the Maury County Fire Department.

Both the little girl and her younger brother were uninjured. Officials do not expect to file any charges against the parents.
