Single Mom Finds Recipe For Success

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Her journey has not been easy, but one single mother is showing others that finding success is about facing fears and new challenges.

When it comes to cooking, Cherica Horton has been at it nearly her entire life. "I've always been in the kitchen since the age of eight," said Horton.

But after high school, basketball was her focus as she went off to college on a scholarship, but soon her life would change.

"I started having kids and I just didn't look back at school," said Horton.

She became a single mother of four kids living in public housing. Horton said she knew there was more; so she returned to her first passion, cooking.

"I would say by me going to the Martha O'Bryan Center with my kids in school, it helped me because they have different programs and cooking was one of them," said Horton.

A fairly new culinary program at the Martha O'Bryan Center opened a door for Horton at Watermark Restaurant in the Gulch with a paid internship.

"I started screaming and jumping up and down because I am one of the first from the class to do the internship," said Horton.

Kevin Purdy is the Sous Chef at Watermark and says the purpose of the program is simple, giving back and providing opportunities

"As a future employer, I would see it as she has a desire to be in this industry and to move forward and better herself," said Purdy.

In only a week, Purdy says Horton has been doing extremely well and has picked up some of his secrets.

"She's able to come here learn these skills for free and have a better understanding for the job," said Purdy.

Horton will tell you her life as not been easy, but that no reason for her future to not burn with success.

"I would say you can do it. Never say no; it's not an option. Always dream big and go for your dreams," said Horton.

The internship is currently scheduled for a month, but since things are going well, a month could become much longer.
