Goodwill, Red Cross Team Up To Help In Crises

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The local American Red Cross and Goodwill organizations are teaming up to better serve people in Tennessee during a crisis.

The Tennessee Volunteer Region of the American Red Cross provides assistance such as shelter but isn't able to take donations of clothing or household goods due to limited resources to sort through and distribute the donations.

But in a partnership announced on Friday, the Red Cross is teaming up with Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee's Goodwill Cares program to take donations during disaster relief.

In exchange, Goodwill will provide the Red Cross with Goodwill Cares gift cards that can be given to those who have suffered a loss. The cards can be used to purchase clothes or household items at any Goodwill store in Middle Tennessee.

"We're excited now that our partnership is growing. It's a partnership in which we will not receive any financial benefit whatsoever," said David Kitchen with the American Red Cross. "All financial benefit will go directly to our clients through Goodwill Cares cards."

"That will allow our clients in an ongoing manner to purchase those things they desperately need, but are not traditionally part of our services." Kitchen added.

The partnership has been in the works since 2009 after the Good Friday tornado in Murfreesboro.
