Family: Soldier With Tennessee Ties Killed In Afghanistan

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The family of an Army soldier from Florida who also has family in Tennessee said he was among six Americans killed in Afghanistan over the weekend in the deadliest day for the United States in eight months.

Air Force Mortuary Affairs Operations said the body of Staff Sgt. Christopher M. Ward, whose hometown is listed as Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is due to arrive at Dover Air Force Base on Monday. A foreign service officer, a Department of Defense civilian and three soldiers were killed Saturday, but the Pentagon hasn't released names of the soldiers or the civilian. A separate attack on Saturday killed another U.S. civilian.

Ward's grandmother, Nancy Ward of Arcadia, Florida, said her 24-year-old grandson stayed with her to finish high school when his mother moved to Tennessee.
