MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- A bizarre late night discovery of human remains in a quiet Murfreesboro neighborhood stunned police officers, not to mention the homeowner who found the dumped urn and human ashes.

"You're surprised because you never expected to find that in your yard," said Tim Reed.  Reed heard a car pull over and looked out his window after midnight Saturday.  The car drove away and he went out to look in his yard.

Reed found a box urn and a bag of human ash.  He immediately called police.

"The urn and the ashes were separated.  The ashes were in a separate bag and the urn was there in the yard," said Kyle Evans with the Murfreesboro Police Dept.

Detectives took the urn and ashes to the morgue at the Middle Tennessee Medical Center for safekeeping until the family can be located.

The urn was inscribed with the name Nelson Francis Craigue III.  Reed said he didn't know the man.  Police did track the name to the Kilgore Funeral Home in Tullahoma.  The business owner confirmed to Newschannel 5 that Craigue was cremated back in November of 2012 and the family took the ashes.  He was working with police in an effort to track them down.

"We just want to try to get the urn back to the family," said Evans.

"I'd hate to see a family lose something like that," said Reed. "There's somebody out there that would like to have it back."

Police said there's no indication yet a crime was committed. No one has reported a stolen urn.  But the how or why the ash and urn ended up on a stranger's lawn remains a mystery.
