MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - A man looking for recyclable cans found nearly $4,000 in cash and returned it after someone accidentally tossed it in a dumpster.

Joe Ellis said he goes looking for recyclable cans at least twice a week in Murfreesboro dumpsters; he is able to earn around $100 a month.

It was on Saturday, just outside the Speedy Mart on East Main Street when Ellis found $3,800 in $100 bills rolled up in a bag.

"That really shocked me," said Ellis. "That is the first time I found that kind of thing in the garbage like the, money."

Ellis said he took the money into Speedy Mart and gave it to the owners.

"Well because I know with it being that much money somebody had to make a mistake, with that much money in the garbage," said Ellis.

The Speedy Mart owners turned the money into police and on Monday, Ellis received a called from the Murfreesboro Police Department saying they found the owner of the money who wanted to thank him.

"I came on out and I met the gentleman, his first name is David; the owner of the money, he shook hands with me and he put something in my hand and it was $400," laughed Ellis.

A good deed paid off for a man who wanted nothing in return, other than the owner to get back what was rightfully his.
