NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Local volunteers left for Mississippi Friday to help after the massive storms killed three people and destroyed homes.

Eleven volunteers from the Nashville Red Cross left Friday morning for Meridian, Mississippi. The volunteers took five emergency response vehicles, a maintenance response vehicle and supplies to a staging area to receive assignments to help with tornado relief efforts.

One tornado in Mississippi stayed on the ground for 56 miles, destroying homes and businesses. The tornado killed one and injured several others in the far eastern part of the state.

Mississippi Governor Phil Bryan declared a state of emergency in Kemper and Noxubee counties following the deadly tornado.

Mississippi has been hard hit this year; the Nashville Red Cross volunteers said they just responded to a tornado outbreak in the state back in February, and now they're heading back again.

"We try to get in there early set up our relief effort do a disaster assessment-- understand what the needs are and we immediately do sheltering, mass care as well as feeding, " said David Kitchen.

Once volunteers survey the damage, that will determine how long they will stay.
