Eggners Ferry Bridge Back Open After Pier Hit

Posted: Updated:

MARSHALL, Ky. – The U.S. 68/KY 80 Eggners Ferry Bridge was reopened Friday night after being shut down for a couple of hours after a tow boat pushing several empty barges hit one of the bridge piers.

U.S. Coast Guard officials said a vessel was headed downstream on the Tennessee River when a gust of wind blew the tow into one of the bridge's piers just after 3 p.m.

Police said the bridge was closed to traffic as a precaution. A Kentucky Transportation Cabinet bridge inspector observed what appeared to be a scraped spot on the pier near the waterline.

There was no structural damage to the bridge.

In January 2012, a 300 foot span of the bridge was knocked into the lake by a cargo ship.
