More Than 100 Inmates Moved From Maury County Jail

Posted: Updated:

MAURY COUNTY, Tenn. - More than 100 inmates have been moved from the overcrowded Maury County jail.

The jail said 106 convicted felons were moved to new state prison facilities over the last week. That brings the number of inmates down from 380 to 274.

Sheriff Enoch George said the transfer will help with budget problems. According to the sheriff, the daily cost of keeping an inmate is $57 per prisoner.

In recent years, dozens of inmates have sued the Maury County jail for unsafe conditions and cruel punishments. Those lawsuits will be heard sometime next year.
