34 TN Career Centers To Relocate Operations

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The state announced on Friday it will restructure its career center network. 34 career centers will permanently suspend job services in order to continue job placement activities and deal with budget cuts.

125 employees from career center offices attended mandatory meetings on Friday letting them know their jobs would be cut by June 18th.

The Department of Labor and Workforce Development's Acting Commissioner Burns Phillips said the move will more effectively serve Tennessee citizens within current budget constraints. He said the career centers had operated at a deficit since 2004, and more than $32 million in one-time federal funding was used to supplement the funding. When that ran out, the Governor included $5 million in state funding in last year's budget to give the department an opportunity to work on a plan to run the career centers more efficiently.

"Citizens of the state will continue to have convenient access to career center services," said Phillips. "We understand the importance of providing support to job seekers and take that responsibility seriously."

Phillips went on to say the new plan allows the state to "rightsize" the program to continue services to all 95 counties across the state.
