Man Charged In Stabbing In East Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A man has been charged with stabbing another man in east Nashville Monday afternoon.

Jessie Summerour, 52, had just left the East Nashville Cooperative Ministry on Main Street, and crossed the street to smoke a cigarette. He said a man, later identified as 49-year-old Ricky Merryman, approached him and they got into an argument.

An affidavit said Merryman pulled out a knife and stabbed Summerour several times. Summerour was able to walk back to the East Nashville Cooperative Ministry to get help. Volunteers called police and helped point out the suspect.

When officers arrested Merryman, they said he had a bloody knife in his pocket.

Merryman, who is homeless, told police he drank a fifth of vodka, and he stabbed the victim because he had threatened to kill him.

Summerour was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he underwent surgery. He was last listed in stable condition.

Merryman was charged with attempted criminal homicide.

A police affidavit initially identified Summerour as a volunteer at East Nashville Cooperative Ministry, but the organization said he was a client.

East Nashville Cooperative Ministry Executive Director Alan Murdock released this statement on Tuesday: "Our team at East Nashville Cooperative Ministry is deeply saddened by yesterday's incident in which a client was stabbed at a bus stop across the street from the organization, shortly after receiving our food relief services. Our mission is to provide critical food relief to our community, and to provide a safe place for our neighbors to serve and be served. We will continue to strive to create a secure environment for people to access support, work and volunteer."
