Rutherford Sheriff Hangs Copy Of Ten Commandments In County Jail

Posted: Updated:

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. - A fight over faith and the First Amendment could be brewing in Rutherford County.

Sheriff Robert Arnold hung a copy of the Ten Commandments along with the Bill of Rights in the lobby of the county jail, even though there's a court order banning commissioners from doing the same thing at the County Courthouse.

Arnold said he got the framed copy last year, and considers it a historical document.

Nearly 10 years ago, the county commission hung the Ten Commandments in the courthouse. A lawsuit was filed, and a federal court ruled the display violated the First Amendment.
