College Students Take Special Role in Marathon

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Some students from Volunteer State Community College took part in the Country Music Marathon with some special friends for an important reason.

As part of a "service learning project" they pushed kids in wheelchairs along the route.
To train, the students in the Physical Therapist Assistant Program pushed strollers with up to 60 pounds loaded inside.

They said it was tough at times, but the thought of what this experience would mean for the 20 children living with various physical disabilities kept them motivated.

"You meet them, and they meet you, they look you in the eye and say we are ready to do this, and it wouldn't matter if I have a broken leg I'm running this race," said student Ryan Lombardi.

As part of the project, the group was also collecting money to help two local groups that provide support services for special needs children.
