Federal Judge More Upbeat On DCS At Hearing

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A federal judge overseeing changes at the Department of Children's Services expressed cautious optimism that the agency's new leadership can resolve some of its problems.

At a Monday hearing, lawyers for the department said DCS has created a process for tracking and reviewing the deaths and near deaths of children the agency has tried to help.

At a January hearing, DCS attorneys said they were not even sure how many those children had died over the past two years.

On Monday, DCS attorneys pegged that number at 193, although they said it is still possible some deaths were missed.

U.S. District Judge Todd Campbell said on Monday that the department was addressing the concerns he raised in January. However, he said he is waiting to see the final results.
