Group Helps Find Foster Homes For Soldiers' Pets

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - As Operation Enduring Freedom enters it's 11th year, hundreds of local soldiers are still being deployed each year and for some finding a home for their pet can be tough.

"He's the closest thing that I have to a kid at the moment," said Sgt. Robert Jones with his 5-year-old Italian greyhound Frank sitting on his lap.

Sgt. Jones is based out of Ft. Campbell and each time he gets deployed he has to find someplace for Frank to stay. It's not always easy given the fact that he's single and all of his family lives in Colorado.

"I need somebody to look out for the little guy," Sgt. Jones explained.

And he's not alone-- for single members of the military especially finding long-term temporary homes for their pets can be tough.

"Having that one little added stress can really add up especially after a few weeks," he added.

That's where the group Guardian Angels for Soldier's Pet has now started stepping in to help.

"If you leave your dog or cat with friends, sometimes something can come up and your friends can't keep them, they end up getting dumped at a shelter which we've had happen a number of times," explained Elizabeth DelGesso who is currently watching two cats and a dog which belong to military member currently in Afghanistan.

"We don't charge these soldiers anything, the only thing they (the soldiers) pay for is the food and vet bills they'd have if they were home," she added.

Currently, Guardian Angels has 40 dogs and cats in foster homes across Tennessee and a handful of other southern states but they have at least 10 more animals for which they can't find temporary housing.

"For families that just want to give back it's a great way to do it."
