CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Police believe someone dropped a large rock on top of a Clarksville Police cruiser as it drove down Interstate 24.

Around 11:30 p.m. Friday, Officer J. Jackson was traveling on I-24 west toward exit 1 in response to a disturbance at the BP station on Trenton and Tiny Town Roads around 11:30 p.m. As he crossed under the Meriwether Road Bridge, a large rock fell from the west side of the bridge and landed on top of his roof.

It struck the roof and light bar, and then bounced to the ground. The roof, windshield, and light bar were damaged. The officer was not hurt.

"A couple inches further forward it would have went through the windshield and killed the officer," said Sgt. Charles Gill.

Police believe that someone, possibly a teenager, dropped the rock from the overpass onto the patrol car as it drove under the bridge. They also believe it was a prank.

"Not alone just the damage to the car, but you're talking taking someone's life because you're being silly," Gill said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (931) 645-TIPS (8477). Callers can remain anonymous, and Crime Stoppers offers up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of persons involved in a crime.
