Nashville International Hopes For Remote Baggage Check-In

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – As the Music City Center opens later this month, Nashville will see an influx of convention goers flood the city, and Nashville International wants to make sure it's ready.

It's proposing a remote bag check site at Music City Center, where travelers would be able to drop off checked luggage for their trip home at the convention center instead of the airport.

This would allow travelers to simply head straight to security once they're ready to take their flight home.

The bags would be checked at the Music City Center, where they would be kept secure and handled by TSA agents.

Nashville International said it's in talks with Music City Center to allow the plan.

Nashville Airport Authority CEO Rob Wigington said the service would help keep things moving at the airport. It would also give visitors more free time to do other things in the city.

Officials said the service would help stagger arrival times for hundreds of convention goers when they're scheduled to leave all at once.

The airport is also looking at having hotels participate in the program.

Travelers said they'd be behind the idea.

"I go to New York and L.A. all the time, so if I can say, ‘Hey, hotel, take care of my bags,' I'd have nothing to worry about," said traveler Jessica McCain.

Airports in Orlando, Atlanta, and Phoenix already offer remote bag check in. Officials with the Music City Center said this idea could make them a bigger player in the nationwide convention market.

Nashville's biggest conferences are still a year away, but the average size of events booked at the Music City Center will be nearly three times the size of those in the old city-owned convention space.

The grand opening is May 19 and 20.
