Massive Rock Slide Forces Closure Of Highway In Carthage

Posted: Updated:

CARTHAGE, Tenn. - A highway in Carthage will remain blocked for about two weeks after a massive rock slide on Thursday morning.

Carthage Police said rocks started cascading down a hillside burying part of State Route 25/Dixon Springs Highway sometime before 5 a.m.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation's Geo-technical and Design staff were assessing the slide, and then contractors will remove larger rock and perform any necessary stabilization work.

The boulders stretch all the way across the two lane highway south of Massey Road and goes back 165 feet. Some of them are the size of dump trucks.

Officials believe the abundance of rain recently received played a role in the rock slide.

No injuries were reported.

Both lanes will remain closed until all the rock can be removed and the road repaired.

Drivers must use the detour in place from State Route 263 (Main Street/Hartsville Pike/Turkey Creek Road) to State Route 85 (Defeated Creek Highway) to State Route 80 (Pleasant Shade Highway).
