CEDAR HILL, Tenn. – An elderly man was killed Tuesday night when he tried to put out a fire at his home in Cedar Hill.

Authorities identified the victim as 73-year-old William Walker. The victim's wife was cooking dinner in the kitchen of the home on Buzzard Creek Road around 8 p.m. when a grease fire started and quickly got out of control. The wife and another person inside the home made it out safely, but the Walker went back in to try to save his home.

"When you have a fire, get out as soon as you can and don't try to save, you know, get your family get out of the residence. don't try to save your personal property," said Russell Gupton with Robertson County EMS.

Walker was overcome by the flames, and died on the scene.

Firefighters remained on the scene for several hours working to put out hot spots. The home was destroyed.
