Flooding Threatens Popular Vacation Location

LINDEN, Tenn. - Flooding may put a damper on a popular Memorial Day weekend getaway.

Just outside of Linden, Tennessee sits a camp site along the Tennessee River where families begin arriving the Thursday before the Memorial Day weekend.

The camp site area has become the summer vacation spot for Thomas Smith and his family for the last four years.

However, a constant problem can put the beginning of many families' summer fun in jeopardy.

"Always in May it seems like the Tennessee River, which is right down here, floods. It floods this whole area and we all have to pull our equipment and gear out," said Smith.

A week ago, Smith found water more than six feet high, covering the elevated deck he built.

"Luckily my barbecue grill stayed. It's back behind there, it still stayed, but you can see the amount of mud that's built up," said Smith.

The water was receding quickly, but the saturated ground makes Smith worried if a lot more rain comes, the problem will continue.

"We're going to hope for some rain to kind of wash away the stink that we smell because this is all left over from the stagnant water," said Smith.

From the looks of things, Thomas feels the Memorial Day weekend tradition will continue, so he said he will be heading back home to Columbia to get things ready.

"We're going to bring out power washers out here and clean up and we're going to have a great Memorial Day weekend," said Smith.

Smith rents his family spot for $900 a year and the contract they signed does warn about potential flooding.
