Middle Schooler Arrested After Gun Found At Dance

Posted: Updated:

FRANKLIN, Tenn. -- A middle school student was arrested Friday night after police officers said he pulled a gun at a school dance. The incident happened at the 8th grade dance at Freedom Middle School in Franklin.

School administrators said other students reported the gun to a school resource officer, Deputy Richard Cole, who immediately arrested the student without incident. The school has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to weapons.

"The overriding message is that all of the components were in place and worked exactly the way they were intended through the School Resource Officer program," said Director of Schools Dr. David Snowden. "Our administrators, our faculty and staff, and most importantly, our students knew exactly what to do in this situation and we are so thankful today that we can say no one was physically harmed.

The student was taken to a juvenile detention center until he can appear before a judge.

School counselors will be available at Freedom Middle School on Monday for any student who needs their services.
