Police Investigate Shooting Near Smyrna Park

Posted: Updated:

SMYRNA, Tenn. - Police are working to piece together conflicting information about a shooting in Smyrna on Sunday night.

Police were notified of a shooting victim that was brought to StoneCrest Medical Center just before 8 p.m.

During their investigation, they learned that 22-year-old Cordarius Johnson was sitting in his car with his girlfriend at Hilltop-Rosenwald Park when two men got into the backseat and demanded money and their cell phones. A crowd at the park began moving toward the vehicle, so the robbers fled to a white Ford Escort parked nearby.

Johnson told police he left the park to go home to retrieve his handgun, and later pulled up next to the robbers in the white Ford Escort. He claimed one of them started shooting, so he returned fire.

21-year-old Tazarius Leach was hit. After being taken to StoneCrest in the vehicle, Leach was later taken by LifeFlight to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Police said Johnson has a Tennessee handgun carry permit. No charges have been filed as police continue to investigate.
