HERNDON, Va. -- A small airplane crashed into the roof of an apartment complex Friday morning in Herndon, VA. That's in the northern Virginia suburbs, near Washington, DC. The tail of the plane could be seen sticking out from the top floor of the apartment building.

Authorities said two people were injured when the small plane crashed into the living room of one apartment. The pilot of the Cessna was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. A woman who was in the apartment was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Corinne Geller, spokesperson for the Virginia State Police, said there were two men in the plane who were taking infrared photographs for an aerial photography company. They were headed to Manassas from Philadephia, but were rerouted to Dulles when they ran low on fuel.

Four families at the apartment complex were evacuated and were being relocated. They were being assisted by The Red Cross.

According to WUSA-TV, the CBS affiliate in Washington, DC, the plane crashed just a few feet away from the apartment building's gas line. Besides damage to the roof, officials said the building appeared to be structurally sound.
