Police Warn To Be Alert For Sex Offenders When Traveling

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Imagine checking in to a hotel only to find you're sharing a hotel with more than a dozen sex offenders.

"I think that's a lot concentrated at one particular address," said Kyle Evans with the Murfreesboro Police Department. Evans said sex offenders tend to congregate at hotels like the Regal Inn near the interstate.

"It meets the statutory requirements for them when they can't live elsewhere," said Evans.

Many sex offenders cannot live near school or parks where children are often present, and hotels can be more affordable than renting an apartment.

The TBI confirmed 16 convicted sex offenders listed their home address at the Regal Inn -- that's one of the highest numbers in the city.

Krisitin Helm with the Tennessee Bureau Of Investigation said there is nothing illegal about hotels renting to sex offenders.

Murfreesboro police also said the staff at Regal Inn work closely with police to keep the hotel safe.

Evans said the staff often calls to report problems and does a good job monitoring who checks into the hotel.

Evans does encourage travelers to check with the Tennessee Sex Offender Registry first before deciding on where to stay -- especially with children.

"So you really need to be familiar with the street address and punch that into the registry first to check if there are any sex offenders in the area," said Helm who added that's the best way to make an informed decision on where to stay.
