4 People Killed In House Fire, Including 2 Kids

CARTHAGE, Tenn. -- The small community of Carthage in Smith County was in shock Sunday after a deadly house fire killed four people, including two children.

The fire broke out early Sunday morning at a home on Hull Avenue. Nine people were at the home when the fire started. Two adults and two children were killed. Family members have identified those killed as Leonard Paradis, Leondreas Richardson, Timothy Watkins, and Jordan Watkins.

"My little niece was just two years old and she didn't really have a chance at all. I'm at a loss for words," said Johnny Lee who is related to some of the nine people who were home when the fire broke out.

The five people who survived were injured and four of them had to be flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

"Four lives were lost, can you make sense of that? There's no sense to be made out of all this," Johnny added.

"This is probably the worst fire in this town's history as far as loss of life," said Joe Hiett, Chief of the Carthage Fire Department. "I know it has been for me, and I've been here 34 years."

Chief Hiett estimated it took firefighters less than five minutes to get on the scene after they got the call, but by then it was already too late.

"When I arrived on the scene we had fire coming from the front door and the roof," said Chief Hiett.

The chief said the fire was extremely intense. Investigators said they don't suspect foul play, but several state and local agencies were there to process the scene and determine the cause of the fire.
