Police: Man Burned Himself To Death In Field

Posted: Updated:

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) - Police said a south-central Kentucky man set himself on fire in a field and died from the injuries.

When firefighters responded to the scene Sunday night, Anthony Joe Maddux told them he had doused himself with gasoline and set himself on fire.

The Daily News reported Maddux, who lived in Alvaton, was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, where he died Monday morning.

Firefighters found the 49-year-old Maddux badly burned and missing most of his clothing. He told police he did it to himself.

Bowling Green Police Department spokesman Officer Ronnie Ward said a witness who works at a nearby restaurant told police that he saw the shadow of a person out in the field lift something over his head before the fire.
