Nashville Firefighters Battle Blazes And Heat

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – As the temperature rises, firefighters have to deal with more than just blazes on the ground: they have to contend with the heat from the sun.

Firefighters said no one was inside a Madison home when a fire ignited the house Monday morning, prompting several firefighters to respond under the blazing sun to bring the fire under control.

The Metro fire department said volunteer rehab units are always on hand for big fires, offering firefighters Gatorade and food.

Firefighters will also switch out more frequently in hot weather, and medic units check firefighters' vital signs to make sure they're not overheating.

"We always do it," said Kim Lawson with the Metro Fire Department.  "Priority for us is to make sure our personnel are safe, healthy and able to perform their jobs."

The fire department said it's their policy to always send a medic unit out on all fire calls, not just for potential victims of the fire, but for the safety of those firefighters.
