Southwest Ohio Child Death Case Sent To Grand Jury

Posted: Updated:

HILLSBORO, Ohio (AP) - A grand jury will hear the case of a Richmond, Ky., couple charged in connection with the discovery of a child's body in southwest Ohio.

Hillsboro Municipal Court Judge David McKenna on Thursday found probable cause to send the case to a grand jury after a hearing. Grand jurors will decide what, if any, charges the couple should face.

Twenty-six-year-old Whitney Johnson and 25-year-old Nathan Ritze are being held on $100,000 bonds on felony counts of abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence.

The body of Johnson's 1-year-old son, Garin Niehaus', was discovered May 31 in a wooded area near Hillsboro.

Police said Johnson told them the child had pneumonia. The Times-Gazette of Hillsboro reports that an officer testified Ritze said he tried to resuscitate the child.
