Family Seeks Scholarship Recipients

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - With college tuition on the rise for nearly all college students, the focus for many families has shifted from celebrating high school graduation to finding money to pay for college; one family wants to help.

Like many incoming college freshmen having money to not only cover tuition, but other expenses, is something thought about well before the first day of class.

"I was always striving in high school to be able to achieve scholarships," said Darian Jones, Tennessee State University senior.

Jones was the first person to receive a scholarship from the Captain Luther J. Hunter, Jr. Memorial Scholarship, receiving $500.

That was nearly five years ago and since then the organization has been able to award nearly $20,000 for minority males.

The problem now: the number of applicants is less than the five $1000 scholarships they plan to award.

"Our mission is to be an exemplary resource for families raising black males," said Thelma Smith with the scholarship foundation.

The scholarship is named after Smith's brother, a 30-year Metro Police Department veteran, who died in 2004. She said he was always about education and the youth.

"So education was really important to him and then giving back and serving was vital of his initiative," said Smith.

To keep Captain Hunter's dream of impacting the next generation alive, the family wants to get the word out to all minority upcoming male college freshmen.

This year, they plan to give out five (5) $1,000 scholarships.

Jones is an example of the impact one family has had on his life and many others.

"It's just amazing that I have the support of my family and my community right now to just achieve my goals and better myself and this community," he said.

If you are interested in applying for the Captain Luther J. Hunter, Jr. Memorial Foundation Scholarship, call or email Thelma Smith atThelma.smith@comcast.net or 615-579-7549.

Applications must be postmarked by June 22, 2013; recipients will be announced the first weekend of July.
