Baby Stable After Surgery, Suspect Charged

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) - Police in Jackson have charged a 24-year-old man with firing a shot that struck a child in the head.

Court documents obtained by The Jackson Sun stated a witness identified Antonio "Tony" Demont Byrd as the gunman. Byrd was arraigned Wednesday on two counts of attempted second-degree murder.

Court documents identify the victim as 1-year-old Jabari Cox. A police official said the boy's family told him on Wednesday that the child was medically stable after surgery at Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center in Memphis. A bullet that came through the outside wall of an apartment grazed the boy's head, fracturing his skull Monday night.

Byrd's brother, 22-year-old Justin O'Neal Byrd, was held on a parole violation charge, but was not immediately charged in the shooting.
