NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A tip to Crime Stoppers led to the apprehension of a murder suspect in Memphis.

Santerius Lavender, 24, was charged in the shooting death of Chad Allen Daniel, 33, on April 9 on Hillside Avenue.

Police said Daniel was with a 26-year-old friend who had arranged a drug buy with Lavender's girlfriend, Bershia Edens, at an apartment complex. When Daniels' friend got out to meet Edens in a breezeway, a gunman, later identified as Lavender, appeared and demanded money.

The friend told police he threw down his wallet and ran back to a Nissan Altima, where Daniel was waiting in the passenger seat. As he tried to drive away, shots were fired into the car and Daniel was struck.

The 26-year-old then drove to Wedgewood Avenue, where he noticed a police officer working a traffic assignment and pulled over to ask for help.

Daniel died at the scene.

Edens, who was arrested on May 31 on a Davidson County Grand Jury indictment, and Lavender were charged with first-degree murder, especially aggravated robbery and aggravated robbery. Lavender is being returned to Nashville from Memphis.
