Civil War Era Home Destroyed In Fire

Posted: Updated:

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. -- A massive fire destroyed an historic home late Saturday night.

The blaze broke out just before midnight on Sulpher Springs Road in Rutherford County. The fire was so large, three different departments responded.

"They said it was a battle field hospital, originally," explained Danny Sells who lived in the house.

When crews arrived, ammunition was going off inside the home. Firefighters avoided that portion of the house until it stopped.

"In a moments notice it can be gone," he added.

Officials said the home was a total loss. The family who lives there was on vacation. One firefighter had to be treated for minor heat exhaustion.

"I don't know if we'll rebuild," Danny said about the blaze.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
