Environmental Study Taking Place In Middle Tennessee

SMYRNA, Tenn. – The Smyrna Airport is a little busier this summer as dozens of researchers from across the U.S. are in middle Tennessee examining what's in the air.

It's part of a massive air pollution and climate study -- the likes of which the city hasn't seen in decades.

Several different organizations are taking part in the study, like the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Science Foundation.

They're at the airport in Smyrna for six weeks as they take air samples during flights around the south, seeing what happens when air pollution from cities mixes with nearby forests.

"We're interested to know what fraction of the haze is caused by pollution and what part of the haze is natural," said researcher Joost DeGouw.  "You can get haze naturally when the emissions from forests react in the atmosphere."

Researchers said they picked the Smyrna airport because of its central location away from the congestion of a big city.
